Sol-Rec2 Project Work to be Presented at Ecomondo Expo

Mon, 06 November, 2023

TWI Senior Project Leader, George Theodosopoulos is due to present details of the SOL-REC2 project at the Ecomondo - Green Technology Expo in Rimini, Italy.

The expo is being held from 7-10 November 2023, during which George and Research Associate Adamantini Loukodimou from the Materials Innovation Centre (a University of Leicester/TWI partnership) will present details of the objectives and findings of Sol –Rec2.

Attendees will be able to see a poster about the project from Tuesday, 7 November on the Circular Plastics Cluster booth (Pavillion D2, Stand 200) and there will also be a presentation about Sol-Rec2 at 2:45pm on this day during the Remadyl final event (Camelia Hall, Pavillion B6 first floor - starting at 2pm). You will also be able to catch Adamantini and George on 8 and 9 November at the Cluster stand number 200 and on 9 November at the Sol-Rec2 mini stand, which is part of the large EU stand in Hall 2.

About Sol-Rec2

The 36-month Sol-Rec2 is targeting the issue of pharmaceutical plastic waste that consists of multiple layers of polymers and aluminium.

This type of packaging typically includes a coated outer layer or printed surface, a structural layer to provide shape and protect against tearing, a tie layer to join the dissimilar materials together, a barrier, for example of oxygen, and a polymer seal that must not interact with the packaging content.

These types of package can be difficult to recycle due to differences in material melting points, processing temperatures, and behavioural properties. These challenges are exacerbated by materials degradation from environmental exposure.

Sol-Rec2 is working to help meet the European Commission (EC) Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) targets that set a 50% recycling target for plastics packaging waste by 2025, and 55% by 2030 by reducing pharmaceutical packaging waste by developing and implementing innovative strategies to improve the sorting, separation, and recycling of pharma blister packs and laminated consumer packaging waste.

TWI and the Materials Innovation Centre are working alongside project partners from France, Spain, Czechia, Hungary, and The Netherlands on this EU-funded project.
